Assam: NHPC Issues Flood Alert Due to Rising Water Levels at Subansiri Hydropower Project
Guwahati, 1st July: The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has issued a flood alert following a substantial increase in water levels at the Subansiri hydropower project in Arunachal Pradesh. Unprecedented rainfall in the Subansiri river basin has prompted the NHPC control room to issue early warnings to downstream areas.
An estimated 16,000 cubic meters per second (cumecs) of water is set to be released from the Subansiri Low Hydroelectric Project Dam. The release, scheduled to commence at 5 am today, is expected to peak around 8 am, potentially affecting downstream areas, particularly in the Namni region of the Subansiri river.
Residents in Dhemaji and North Lakhimpur districts have been advised by the NHPC to remain vigilant and stay updated about the evolving situation. There are concerns about the possible necessity of opening multiple sluice gates to effectively manage the rising water levels.
The surge in water levels is attributed to continuous heavy rainfall in neighboring regions of Arunachal Pradesh. This development has raised alarms among local communities, highlighting the imminent threat of flooding in lower reaches of the Subansiri river.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing preparedness and urging caution among residents as NHPC prepares to handle the increased water flow from the hydropower project.
