Assam: NIA Charges ULFA(I) Chief Paresh Baruah, Two Others in Independence Day Blast Conspiracy Case

Guwahati: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formally filed a chargesheet against ULFA(I) chief Paresh Baruah and two of his associates for their alleged involvement in a conspiracy to carry out multiple IED blasts in Assam on Independence Day last year. The chargesheet, filed in a Guwahati court on Friday, marks a significant step in the ongoing crackdown on insurgent activities aimed at destabilising the region.

Baruah, who remains in Myanmar and operates under various aliases including Paresh Asom and Zaman Bhai, has been named alongside Abhijit Gogoi and Jahnu Boruah in the case. All three have been charged under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Explosive Substances Act.

According to the NIA, the accused were directly linked to the planting of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) at Dispur Last Gate in Guwahati as part of a larger plan orchestrated by ULFA(I) to disrupt Independence Day celebrations. The explosives were intended to cause mass casualties, damage public property, and spread fear among the population.

The central agency took over the case in September 2024 and has since uncovered evidence indicating that the attack was part of a coordinated attempt to undermine national unity and create unrest in Assam. The conspiracy, the NIA stated, was a deliberate effort by ULFA(I) to assert its presence and challenge the sovereignty of India through acts of terror.

The chargesheet reinforces the government’s commitment to counterinsurgency and reflects the seriousness with which authorities view any attempt to disrupt peace in the Northeast. With this legal move, the NIA aims to ensure that those involved in threatening national security are brought to justice, while sending a strong message to other insurgent groups operating in the region.
