Assam: Nine-Year-Old Girl Missing in Brahmaputra, SDRF Continues Search Amid Strong Currents

Guwahati: A nine-year-old girl went missing in the Brahmaputra River on the evening of March 12 while bathing with another child, prompting an extensive search operation by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Despite relentless efforts, the child remains untraced.

The missing girl, identified as Umma Salema, is the daughter of Mustofa Sheikh and a resident of Kuntirchar Part-II in Dhubri. According to eyewitnesses, Umma and another girl were bathing when they accidentally slipped into deeper waters. While locals managed to save one child, Umma was swept away by the river’s strong currents before help could reach her.

The SDRF launched a full-scale search operation on March 13, deploying divers and specialized teams to scan the river. However, the powerful currents have made the mission extremely challenging.

“The operation is ongoing, but the water flow is making it difficult. We are doing everything possible to locate the child,” an SDRF official stated. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as efforts to recover the missing girl persist.
