Assam: “No Bridge, No Vote” Resounds in Margherita as Satra Mukti Sangram Samity Protests Government Inaction

Guwahati, 23rd November: In a fervent demonstration, Margherita town echoed with the slogans of “No Bridge, No Vote” on November 23, as the Satra Mukti Sangram Samity, backed by the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and Tirap Jagun Regional Committee, along with local residents, protested the BJP-led Assam government’s failure to build the Jagun Kothasema Bordumsa connectivity bridge.

Rahul Chetry, the General Secretary of the Satra Mukti Sangram Samity Central Committee, expressed profound disappointment, highlighting that, even after 75 years of independence, the residents of Jagun area are compelled to use boats to cross the Tirap river to reach essential areas. Chetry criticized the government’s “step-motherly attitude” towards the region.

Singling out Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma and Union Minister Rameswar Teli, Chetry accused them of not delivering on promises made before Assembly and MP elections regarding the vital bridge’s construction. He accused Sharma of prioritizing interests other than those of his constituents and criticized Teli for failing to address the issues during legislative sessions.

Chetry, speaking for the Satra Mukti Sangram Samity and Jagun area residents, declared, “If the Jagun-Kothasema-Bordumsa connectivity bridge is not constructed before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, we shall boycott the election and withhold our valuable votes.” The protest stands as a poignant call for governmental accountability and action on long-overdue infrastructure promises.
