Assam: No ex-CM to get govt accommodation, full security

Guwahati: The Assam government on Wednesday stated that it has revoked the accommodation and security cover it had previously provided to former chief ministers.

The current live ex-chief ministers of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal and Prafulla Kumar Mahanta will continue to use the facilities. The present Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, will be the first to benefit from the new arrangement.

“Government of Assam revoked the facilities of accommodation and full security coverage provided to ex-chief ministers of Assam prospectively in pursuance of the decision taken by the Cabinet in its meeting held on January 1, 2022,” an official release said.

It is not clear, however, what the government meant by “full security”.

At that Cabinet meeting, it was resolved that no past chief minister would be given government housing or security covering equal to the current CM.

Following the meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the decision will take effect “whenever I step down and my successors take over.”
