Assam: NTPC Thermal Plant in Salakati Faces Backlash Over Environmental Damage

Salakati, Assam: The NTPC thermal power plant in Salakati is at the center of growing protests by local residents, who claim the plant’s operations are severely harming the environment and threatening their livelihoods.

Farmers from around 15 nearby villages are reporting widespread damage caused by the chemical waste allegedly discharged through the plant’s pipelines. According to villagers, the contamination has led to the mass death of fish in ponds, destruction of farmlands, and illness among livestock that consumed the polluted water.

“The situation is dire,” a local farmer stated, highlighting the devastating losses to agriculture and livestock, which are central to their way of life.

In response to the mounting grievances, residents have organized protests, demanding immediate intervention from NTPC to address the pollution and safeguard public health. Protesters emphasize that the chemical waste poses not only an environmental threat but also a direct risk to human safety.

The community has issued an ultimatum to NTPC, warning that they will take action to shut down the discharge pipelines unless corrective measures are swiftly implemented. The villagers are calling for accountability from the power company to prevent further environmental damage and restore normalcy to the region.
