Assam Olympic Association Unveils Bhogeswar Baruah National Sports Award Trophy
Guwahati: Guwahati witnessed a proud sporting moment on August 28 as the Assam Olympic Association (AOA) unveiled the Bhogeswar Baruah National Sports Award trophy, instituted in honour of the legendary Assamese athlete and Arjuna awardee.
The event, attended by Sports Minister Nandita Gorlosa, star boxer Ankushita Bodo, and AOA General Secretary Lakhya Konwar, marked a significant step in recognising Assam’s sporting icons and nurturing future champions.
The award pays tribute to Bhogeswar Baruah, who scripted history by winning a gold medal in the 1966 Asian Games in Bangkok, becoming the first Assamese athlete to achieve the feat. To keep his legacy alive, the award will be presented annually across six categories, with marquee honours including Best Sportsperson of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports, and Emerging Sportsperson of the Year.
The inaugural ceremony is scheduled for September 3, 2025, in Guwahati, and will be graced by international athletes and sporting legends, including India’s sprint icon P.T. Usha. Adding to the tribute, AOA officials announced that Sarusajai Stadium will be renamed after Baruah.
“This award is a step forward in Assam’s commitment to sports governance and development. By recognising talent and honouring our icons, we are investing in a culture of excellence that will inspire generations to come,” Sports Minister Gorlosa said.
AOA General Secretary Konwar echoed this sentiment, noting that Baruah’s victory continues to inspire sporting ambition. “This award ensures his legacy lives on, while motivating our youth to aim higher in the field of sports,” he said.
Instituted to be conferred on Baruah’s birthday, the award will not only celebrate achievements but also strengthen Assam’s growing role in India’s sporting ecosystem.
