Assam: One More Held For Suspected Maoists Links

Guwahati: One more suspected person has been arrested by Assam Police for alleged links with the banned Communist Party of India (CPI)-Maoist outfit from Kamrup district of Assam on Wednesday.

The arrestee has been identified as Hridoy Kalita.

According to reports, Kalita was apprehended by sleuths from the Assam police’s crime section in the Chaygaon area of Kamrup district near Guwahati.

Reportedly, Kalita is being questioned by officials from the crime branch.

Hridoy Kalita’s arrest is part of the Assam police’s campaign on Maoists spreading their roots across the state and the Northeast as a whole.

Earlier this week, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warned that the state police are dealing with the third wave of Maoist attempts to establish a base in the state.

“Maoists attempted to create a base in Assam in the past. This is the third and last wave. Similar attempts were made in 2008 and 2013-14, according to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

CM Sarma further expressed optimism that Assam’s Maoist network would be ‘neutralised’ shortly.

“The National Investigation Agency and the Assam Police Department are collaborating to track down the entire network of Maoist sympathisers and supporters.” We’ve already taken a few people into custody. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “We will neutralise the network very soon.”

It may be mentioned that in a huge victory on March 7, Assam police arrested Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee alias Kanchan Da, a central committee member of the CPI-Maoist.

He was reportedly arrested from Cachar district of Assam, from where he was allegedly trying to establish a base of the Maoists in the Barak Valley of the state.
