Assam Opposition Leader Slams Government Over Termination of Polytechnic Institute Employees
Guwahati: Assam Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia has criticised the state government for terminating the services of employees appointed in 2017 at 11 modern polytechnic institutes across the state.
Speaking in the Assam Assembly, Saikia revealed that the affected employees had followed due process for their appointments and were highly qualified. However, they were allegedly dismissed after protesting for better service conditions and demanding regular salaries.
Saikia stated that these employees played a crucial role in securing All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) certification for these institutes. Instead of addressing their grievances, the government terminated their services simply because they were protesting at the designated protest grounds.
Saikia branded the termination “unfortunate” and accused the government of ignoring the contributions of these educators. He highlighted the achievements and qualifications of terminated teachers, criticising the move for its adverse impacts on local talent and livelihoods.
Saikia emphasised that while other states prioritise local employment, Assamese youth are being sidelined. The Congress has submitted an adjournment motion seeking a discussion on the issue in the Assembly, calling the move unjust and detrimental to the state’s technical education sector. The state government has not yet responded to the allegations.
