Assam: Outrage Erupts in Gossaigaon After Alleged Police Brutality Leads to Man’s Death
Guwahati, 16th September: Unrest swept through Gossaigaon, Assam, following the death of a 35-year-old man, Bappi Dey, allegedly due to police brutality on September 15. Dey, a resident of Pal Para in Gossaigaon Sadar town and the son of the late Surya Dey, died shortly after being taken into police custody, triggering outrage among the local community.
According to initial reports, Bappi Dey, who had a history of mental health issues, was arrested after an incident on College Road, where he allegedly damaged a vehicle. Eyewitnesses claim that the police swiftly detained him and transported him to the local police station.
However, Dey’s death soon after his arrest has raised serious questions about the actions of the police, with accusations that excessive force may have played a role. The community, deeply angered by the incident, is demanding an investigation and accountability for what they view as an unnecessary and tragic escalation of force.
Local authorities have yet to provide a detailed explanation of the events that led to Dey’s death, but calls for a transparent inquiry into the incident are growing. The case has also renewed concerns about how law enforcement handles individuals with mental health issues, adding to the already tense situation in Gossaigaon.
