Assam: Paharpur Sema Village Embraces Green Future on World Environment Day
Guwahati: The spirit of environmental stewardship truly bloomed in Paharpur Sema village, nestled within the 83rd Margherita constituency, as World Environment Day was celebrated with fervent enthusiasm. A massive plantation drive and a resolute anti-plastic pledge event, meticulously organised by the Paharpur Sema Village Council, marked the occasion, setting a powerful precedent for community-led ecological restoration.
The day-long programme saw over 500 saplings find new homes, a testament to the collective commitment of local residents, revered community leaders, and diligent forest officials. This ambitious initiative was deeply rooted in the global theme for this year’s World Environment Day, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” aiming to foster ecological well-being and champion sustainable practices right at the grassroots level.
The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Paharpur village pradhan Hukato Sema, alongside the dynamic Council President Hotokhu Sema and dedicated Secretary Khekato Sema, whose leadership inspired scores of villagers to participate wholeheartedly. The verdant bounty of saplings, crucial for the success of the plantation drive, was generously provided by the Jagun Range Forest Office, operating under the vigilant Digboi Forest Division, showcasing a collaborative effort towards a greener tomorrow.
In a compelling address to reporters, Council Secretary Khekato Sema underscored the critical urgency of the environmental predicament brought about by unchecked plastic consumption. “This year’s World Environment Day theme, ‘Beat the Plastic,’ serves as a stark reminder of the extensive damage plastics have inflicted upon our fragile environment,” he articulated with conviction. “Our village has taken a solemn vow to permanently shun the use of plastic, and we are unflinchingly committed to becoming a beacon of eco-conscious living for others to emulate.”
