Assam Panchayat Poll Tally Underway Amidst Heightened Security Following Delimitation
Guwahati: The meticulous process of counting votes commenced this morning, May 11th, across Assam’s 27 districts, marking a pivotal moment in the state’s democratic exercise. This election, the first since the recent delimitation of constituencies, unfolded in two phases, on May 2nd and 7th, capturing the attention of the state’s vast electorate.
“Ballot paper counting initiated promptly at 8 am, with counting agents arriving well before the scheduled time,” stated a senior Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) official, highlighting the efficiency and preparedness of the electoral machinery.
Acknowledging instances of unrest during the polling period, the administration has deployed comprehensive security measures at all counting centers, ensuring a secure and transparent counting process. “Given the scale of the election, involving thousands of seats, we are committed to expediting the counting. Yet, the sheer volume suggests the process may extend into tomorrow,” the official elaborated.
The election encompassed 21,920 Gram Panchayat (GP) seats, with 10,883 reserved for women; 2,192 Anchalik Parishad (AP) seats, of which 1,124 were reserved for women; and 397 Zilla Parishad seats, with 199 reserved for women. Notably, 1,289 seats were already decided uncontested, including 21 ZP seats, 151 AP seats, and 1,117 GP seats.
With an eligible voter base of 1.80 crore, the election witnessed a commendable voter turnout of 74.71 percent, reflecting the robust participation of the state’s citizenry in the democratic process.
