Assam Panchayat Polls See 70% Turnout Amidst Scattered Re-Poll Announcements

Guwahati, Assam – The first phase of the Assam Panchayat Election 2025 has drawn to a close, with the Assam State Election Commission reporting a provisional voter turnout of approximately 70.19%.

Citizens across 14 districts actively participated in the democratic process on May 2, casting their votes between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM. The districts that went to the polls in this initial phase included Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, and Jorhat.

Despite the enthusiastic participation of voters, the polling process was not entirely without incident. While officials largely characterized the day as peaceful, a limited number of untoward events were reported from certain polling stations.

Consequently, the Election Commission has announced that a re-poll will be necessary in a total of 43 polling stations spread across five districts. Hailakandi will see the highest number of re-polls with 31 affected booths, followed by Sribhumi with 8, Lakhimpur with 2, and both Golaghat and Majuli with 1 polling station each. The specific dates for these re-polls are expected to be announced by the Commission in the near future.

Election officials have expressed their satisfaction with the overall high level of voter engagement witnessed during the first phase. They also commended the diligent efforts of the polling personnel and the security agencies for their role in ensuring a largely smooth and secure electoral environment across the state.
