Assam: PETA India Challenges ‘Bulbul Fights’;Files Petition with Gauhati High Court
Guwahati, 1st February: Taking a decisive stance against the controversial practice of ‘Bulbul Fights’ in Assam, PETA India has filed a petition with the Gauhati High Court.
The organization seeks an interim stay during the legal proceedings to prevent any ongoing bulbul fights involving red-vented bulbuls— a species protected under Schedule II of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
PETA’s investigations expose the illegal capture, drugging, and starvation of these birds for aggressive fights, violating central laws.
The issue gained public attention after the Assam government’s decision to permit buffalo and bulbul bird fights during Bhogali Bihu celebrations.
PETA India denounces this move, emphasizing its contradiction to India’s cultural ethos of non-violence and compassion.
The case, set for further consideration on February 1, represents PETA India’s legal effort to end the brutal tradition of ‘Bulbul Fights’ and ensure the well-being of these innocent creatures.
