Assam: Pioneering Sattriya Artist Guru Prasad Ojah Passes Away at 92

Guwahati, 11th August: Guru Prasad Ojah, a revered figure in Assam’s cultural heritage and a pioneer of Sattriya culture, passed away on Saturday at the age of 92. The renowned artist breathed his last at his residence in Bilortari Hati, Barpeta district, leaving behind a legacy that has deeply influenced the cultural landscape of Assam.

Guru Prasad Ojah was widely celebrated for his exceptional contributions to Sattriya Ojapali, a traditional dance and musical form intrinsic to Assam’s rich heritage. His dedication to preserving and promoting this art form earned him national recognition, including the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Award, both of which were bestowed upon him for his work in Sattriya Ojapali (Byas Kirtan).

His passing marks the end of an era for Sattriya culture in Assam, as he was one of the last stalwarts of a tradition that has been central to the region’s identity. Guru Prasad Ojah is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters, who, along with countless others, will carry forward his artistic legacy.

His contributions to Assamese culture will continue to inspire and guide future generations of artists, ensuring that the traditions he championed remain vibrant and revered.
