Assam Pitches Trade and Tourism Gems to US Investors in New York

Guwahati: New York recently played host to a significant outreach by Assam, as the state actively courted American industry leaders with promising investment opportunities in its burgeoning trade and tourism sectors. The Indian Consulate in the bustling American metropolis was the venue for these pivotal engagements, which also included a dedicated business-to-business (B2B) meet focused on the globally renowned Assam Tea.

The Consulate’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday buzzed with updates, highlighting the successful execution of these events. One post specifically noted, “@IndiainNewYork hosted a Roundtable on Business & Investment Opportunities in Assam with @USISPForum,” underscoring the collaborative spirit behind the initiative. The US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, a non-governmental organisation, was instrumental in fostering this dialogue aimed at strengthening the strategic partnership between India and the United States.

Attendees gained valuable insights as Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota and Consul General Binaya S Pradhan addressed the industry titans present. Their remarks shed light on the vast, untapped potential that Assam offers across its trade, tourism, and broader investment landscape. A special mention was made of the presence of celebrated Chef Vikas Khanna, who also shared his perspective, adding a unique flavour to the proceedings.

In a parallel event, a vibrant B2B Buyer-Seller meet unfolded at the Consulate, specifically designed to spotlight the rich legacy and immense global potential of Assam Tea. This gathering was part of a series of events commemorating 200 years of Assam Tea, bringing together major producers and suppliers from Assam with prominent tea buyers from the US.

Chief Secretary Kota, alongside the Consul (Trade), provided intricate details about the unique characteristics and unparalleled quality of Assam tea, truly bringing its story to life for the American audience. Arijit Raha, Secretary of the Indian Tea Association, enriched the discussion by providing a historical overview of the robust India-US tea trade and introducing the participating Indian tea companies. The event culminated in engaging tea tasting sessions, where experts and sommeliers guided attendees through an immersive tea experience, fostering valuable connections between Indian producers and their American counterparts, ultimately strengthening bilateral trade ties.
