Assam Plans Sluice Gate to Mitigate Flood Risks in Pandu
Guwahati, 4th July: During a recent visit to the flood-affected region of Pandu in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced plans for the construction of a sluice gate aimed at channelizing floodwaters to mitigate future flood risks.
Addressing the media, Sarma emphasized the urgency of addressing flood-related issues comprehensively, stating, “The authorities will build a sluice gate to channelize floodwaters in the Pandu area.” He acknowledged the severe impact of flooding exacerbated by backflow from the Brahmaputra River, which has inundated surrounding areas.
Sarma assured residents that immediate measures would be taken to manage the crisis effectively. He also noted that the water level in the Brahmaputra River is expected to decrease temporarily due to a cessation in rainfall, offering a brief reprieve for affected communities.
Responding to longstanding demands from residents for flood mitigation infrastructure, Sarma confirmed consultations with engineers and pledged full government support for the sluice gate project. He underscored the importance of proactive infrastructure development to safeguard against future flood disasters in the region.
The announcement comes amidst ongoing efforts by local authorities and communities to cope with the aftermath of severe flooding, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing resilience against natural calamities in Assam.
