Assam: Poacher Killed in Armed Encounter with Forest Guards in Nameri National Park

Guwahati: A tragic incident unfolded in the heart of Nameri National Park, where a suspected poacher was fatally shot during an armed confrontation with forest guards.

The encounter occurred approximately 50 kilometers from the park’s regional office while forest department officials were conducting an anti-poaching operation within the dense jungle terrain.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the poacher had illegally entered the park with the intent to hunt. Tragically, a sambar deer had already fallen victim to the poacher’s actions. When confronted by the forest guards, the poacher resorted to violence, opening fire upon the officials. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, the poacher was fatally wounded.

Following the incident, forest guards secured the scene, recovering a crude, homemade firearm and the carcass of the slain sambar deer. Efforts are currently underway to identify the deceased individual. In the wake of this incident, authorities have reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to protecting the park’s precious wildlife and have pledged to intensify anti-poaching measures to prevent future tragedies.
