Assam Police Arrest Government Employee for Expressing Support to Banned ULFA-I on Social Media

Guwahati, 29th December: In a significant move against backers of the proscribed militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), Assam Police has detained a government employee for endorsing the banned group on social media.

The arrest unfolded in Assam’s Nagaon district, where Dharma Dutta, employed at the Nagaon Municipal Board and a resident of Uriagaon Village, was apprehended following the detection of his supportive post by authorities.

Dutta not only displayed allegiance to ULFA-I but also conveyed a desire to join the separatist organization, as revealed in the comment section of his social media post.

This arrest is part of a broader crackdown by Assam Police targeting sympathizers of ULFA-I. Recent operations have led to the detention of various individuals associated with the group, including the capture of two hardcore militants—Bibek Asom and Mrigen Asom—in a joint operation by Assam Police and Assam Rifles in Tinsukia district.

The police’s actions align with warnings from Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP), Gyanendra Pratap Singh, cautioning against public support for outlawed terrorist organizations on social media. He emphasized that such actions will result in arrest and prosecution under the law.

The DGP’s firm stance follows a series of arrests, such as that of Bijumoni Rabha from Tamulpur district, detained under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for expressing interest in joining ULFA-I through a Facebook post.

These developments underscore Assam Police’s heightened efforts to combat the influence and support for ULFA-I within the state. The crackdown not only targets individuals actively involved with the militant group but also aims to prevent the dissemination of their ideology through social media and other platforms.
