Assam Police arrests 14 persons for “supporting” Taliban

Guwahati: The Assam Police have arrested at least 14 people for making “objectionable” social media statements and allegedly supporting the Taliban.

According to a list issued by the police department, 14 persons were arrested for allegedly posting various comments and videos on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, encouraging the Taliban’s victory in Afghanistan. The accused were arrested from 10 different districts which include Darrang, Cachar, Kamrup, Barpeta, Dhubri, Hailakandi, South Salmara, Goalpara, Hojai, and Karimganj.

A senior police official on Saturday said that the arrests were made since Friday and all the accused were arrested under different sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, IT Act, and CrPC

Reportedly, the arrested persons include several religious heads of a particular community. A medical student named Nadim Akhtar Laskar was also arrested. The arrested person has been identified to be an MBBS student at the Tezpur Medical College.

The police further informed that the accused were tracked down based on their social media posts and arrested by police in that locality.
