Assam Police Bust Riverine Cow Smuggling Ring in Dhubri

Guwahati: In a significant triumph against cross-border illicit trade, Golakganj police in Assam’s Dhubri district successfully intercepted a major cow smuggling operation, rescuing eight bovines and apprehending a key suspect. The swift action underscores a noticeable shift in smuggling methodologies, with perpetrators increasingly opting for treacherous riverine routes to circumvent heightened surveillance on conventional roadways.

The operation, launched in the early hours of Tuesday, saw a dedicated team from Golakganj Police Station, under the astute leadership of In-Charge Debajit Kalita, acting on precise intelligence. Their efforts culminated in the interception of a mechanised boat, suspected to be a primary conduit for transporting cattle from West Bengal, across the permeable border, and into Bangladesh via the intricate network of riverine island areas, locally known as chars. The meticulously planned raid led to the immediate arrest of Mofizul Ali Pramanik, identified as a pivotal supplier in the illicit trade, from his residence in Bor Saraikhola village. Concurrently, a separate police contingent descended upon Ghughumari Char in Moisa Char, where they successfully seized the eight smuggled cows, now safely under police protection.

Authorities are of the firm belief that these smugglers have ingeniously recalibrated their tactics to evade detection, utilising remote char areas near Binnachara as clandestine temporary holding pens for the cattle before attempting their illegal trans-border movements. The interrogation of the apprehended suspect is currently underway, with police aiming to unravel the complete expanse of this sophisticated smuggling network and identify further crucial connections within the cross-border cattle trade. The Golakganj police have reiterated their unwavering commitment to escalating their efforts in curbing such nefarious activities within the region.
