Assam Police Clarifies Status of Individuals in Rs 2,200 Crore Online Trading Scam Investigation

Guwahati, 10th September: In a press briefing held on September 10, Assam Police provided critical updates on the ongoing investigation into a massive Rs 2,200 crore online trading scam. Superintendent of Police V. V. Rakesh Reddy clarified that four individuals, including Sumi Borah and Tarkik Borah, are not yet classified as ‘most wanted,’ contrary to earlier reports.

The investigation has so far led to the arrest of Vishal Phukan and Abhijit Chanda. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to delve deeper into the case. As part of the probe, 18 bank accounts have been frozen, and a look-out notice has been issued for 7 to 8 individuals. The police have not disclosed specific names from the look-out list to preserve the integrity of the investigation. Those under scrutiny include a doctor, an artist, and a YouTuber.

Authorities are also exploring the possibility of funds being hidden outside of banks, with bank records for over a year currently under review. Preliminary estimates suggest that approximately Rs 100 crore may be involved in the scam.

In a related development, the police are investigating Ranjit Kakati’s role in another trading fraud, with an arrest made in Haryana. A look-out notice has also been issued for the main suspect in the FX trading scam.

Previously, there were suspicions that Sumi Borah and her husband might have sought refuge in Meghalaya or possibly fled to Nepal. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured that Borah will be apprehended soon.
