Assam: In a tragic incident, Assam Police constable Madhab Chutia lost his life on Sunday, January 5, 2025, after an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound while handling his service weapon.
Constable Chutia, who served as the Personal Security Officer (PSO) to the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Dibrugarh, was reportedly cleaning his service-issued AK-74 rifle at his residence when the weapon discharged unexpectedly.
According to sources, the bullet struck Chutia in the chest and ricocheted, causing damage to a television in the house. He was immediately rushed to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) for treatment. Despite the medical team’s efforts, Chutia succumbed to his injuries.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the police department, with colleagues and senior officials mourning the untimely loss of a dedicated officer.
Authorities have initiated an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the mishap and to implement measures aimed at preventing such accidents in the future.
