Assam Police Crackdown at Makum Traffic Point Leads to Major Drug Bust

Guwahati, August 31, 2024 — In a significant operation, Assam Police conducted a late-night raid at the Makum traffic point in Tinsukia on August 30, leading to the seizure of 94.25 grams of suspected heroin and Rs 60,000 in cash. Acting on a tip-off, the police apprehended three individuals believed to be involved in drug trafficking.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Norottam Tamuli from Talpathar (Bordumsa), Dombaru Moran from Dirak Kophatuli (Kakopathar), and Lakheswar Dewgohoria from Tongna Hunjan (Bordumsa). Their arrest marks another successful effort by Assam Police in its ongoing war against drug trafficking in the region.

This operation is part of a broader crackdown on narcotics in Assam, following a series of major drug busts in July. The Special Task Force (STF) had previously seized over two kilograms of suspected heroin in separate operations in Guwahati and Golaghat, leading to the arrest of four suspected drug peddlers.

According to Pranab Jyoti Goswami, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Assam Police, the recent operations were meticulously planned based on specific intelligence inputs. In Goalpara, the STF unearthed a cache of heroin stored in 140 soap boxes, while in Guwahati’s Katabari area, 308 grams of heroin destined for Barpeta were confiscated, having been transported from Dimapur, Nagaland.

These consistent and targeted efforts by Assam Police underscore the state’s commitment to curbing the drug menace, bringing those involved in trafficking to justice, and ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
