Assam: Police Foil Escape Attempt by Serial Burglar in Dramatic Late-Night Operation

Guwahati: In a high-stakes police operation in the Moinakhurung area under Garchuk, officers shot and injured a notorious burglar, Jaydeb Mazumdar, during an alleged escape attempt.

The incident unfolded late at night on January 20, during an operation led by the Paltan Bazar police.

Jaydeb Mazumdar, a 19-year-old from Birubari, is a serial offender with over 60 cases of theft and robbery registered against him. According to police sources, he was being escorted to Garbhanga Pahar to assist in identifying an accomplice when he attempted to escape.

Inspector Kuleshjyoti Bhuyan of the Paltan Bazar police station explained the sequence of events. “During the operation, Mazumdar claimed to feel nauseous and stepped aside. Seizing the moment, he attempted to grab a pistol from one of our officers. To prevent his escape and in self-defense, we were compelled to fire at him, injuring his leg.”

The late-night operation also led to the detention of five other suspected burglars. Authorities emphasized their commitment to cracking down on criminal activities in the region, with investigations ongoing to dismantle the network of accomplices involved.

Mazumdar is currently receiving medical treatment under police custody and remains a key figure in the ongoing investigation. This dramatic encounter highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in tackling serial offenders and ensuring public safety.
