Assam: Police Foil Extortion Attempt by Alleged ULFA Operatives in Tezpur

Guwahati, 13th June: In a significant operation, the Tezpur police arrested three individuals suspected of affiliating with the banned outfit ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam) during an attempted extortion bid at Mission Chariali. The arrested individuals, identified as Sanjib Baruah alias Dadu, Bendang Julsuu, and Bhavesh Kalita alias Kanai, were apprehended red-handed while demanding money from local traders.

According to police sources, the arrests came following a tip-off about ongoing extortion activities in the area. The trio was intercepted by law enforcement officers as they approached traders for monetary contributions allegedly on behalf of ULFA.

Sanjib Baruah, Bendang Julsuu, and Bhavesh Kalita were promptly taken into custody and presented before the court. They have been charged with extortion, and investigations are underway to ascertain their links to ULFA.

The police have urged the public to stay vigilant and report any instances of extortion or illegal demands made by individuals claiming association with militant groups. This proactive approach aims to prevent such incidents and maintain law and order in the region.
