Assam Police Hail Success of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Report Sharply Improved Conviction and Charge-Sheet Rates
Guwahati: Assam Police have reported a remarkable improvement in their operational efficiency, crediting the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for the significant boost in charge-sheet filing and conviction rates.
The Director General of Police (DGP), Harmeet Singh, announced these promising statistics, highlighting a transformative shift in the state’s criminal justice landscape since the BNS replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in July 2024.
The latest data reveals that in July 2025, a staggering 93 per cent of BNS cases saw a charge-sheet filed, a notable increase from the 84.42 per cent recorded just two months prior in May.
The positive trend isn’t limited to charge-sheeting. The DGP pointed out a substantial leap in the state’s conviction rate, which has surged from a mere 5.5 per cent in 2020 to an impressive 26.72 per cent this year. This improvement is mirrored by a dramatic reduction in pending investigations, which have plummeted from a daunting 1,54,280 cases in 2020 to just 12,338 by July 2025.
Singh attributed this progress to the strategic guidance of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the proactive police reforms implemented to expedite investigations and bolster prosecutions. The DGP shared these updates on social media platform X following a state crime review meeting on August 25.
