Assam Police Intensifies Crackdown on Child Marriage, 416 Arrested in Phase 3 Operations

The Assam police launched the third phase of their ongoing operation against child marriage on the night of December 21-22, leading to the arrest of 416 individuals and the registration of 335 cases.1 This continued crackdown demonstrates the state’s unwavering commitment to eradicating this social evil.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his official X handle to reiterate the government’s resolve, stating, “We will continue to take bold steps to end this social evil!” He further emphasized the significant outcomes of Phase 3, highlighting the 416 arrests and 335 cases registered.2 All arrested individuals are scheduled to be produced in court on December 22.

In a separate incident, Dhubri police detained 68 individuals from various parts of the district on December 22 for their involvement in facilitating and organizing child marriages. The areas affected include College TOP, Bazar TOP, Dharmasala, Soulmari, Gauripur, Golakganj, Tamarhat, and Bilasipara.

These operations underscore the Assam government’s determined efforts to eliminate the illegal practice of underage marriages, which remains a serious concern within the region.
