Assam Police Launch Investigation After Journalist Harassed by Cab Driver in Guwahati

Assam: Assam Police have registered a case against a cab driver accused of harassing senior journalist and Nandini Magazine editor, Maini Mahanta, on the night of December 29. The incident occurred in Guwahati when Mahanta was traveling home after attending an event in Panjabari.

Mahanta recounted the disturbing experience on social media, explaining how a simple request to turn on the car’s air conditioning due to her dust allergy escalated into verbal abuse and a physical threat. She described how the driver abruptly stopped the car and demanded she exit in a dark, unsafe area. Fearing for her safety, Mahanta contacted her husband and immediately called the police.

In her formal complaint to Dispur Police Station, Mahanta detailed the driver’s aggressive behavior and threats after she refused to leave the vehicle. The cab, identified as a Premier Swift Dzire (registration number AS 01 PC 7157), is currently under investigation.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously directed the police to take swift action against the driver. Authorities have assured that they will take appropriate measures based on Mahanta’s complaint, as the investigation into the incident continues.
