Assam Police Nabs Duo from Manipur with Rs 18,000 in Counterfeit Currency

Guwahati: In a significant crackdown on counterfeit currency rackets, the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) team has apprehended two men from Manipur and seized fake Indian currency notes (FICN) with a face value of Rs 18,000.

Acting on a specific intelligence tip-off, the police intercepted a Hyundai i20 near the Audi showroom in Beharbari on August 10. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 36 counterfeit notes of Rs 500 denomination.

The two accused, identified as 21-year-old Wasim Wangmayum from Lilong in Thoubal district and 25-year-old Samurailatpam Prasanta Sharma from Mantrikhong in Imphal, were immediately taken into custody. In addition to the fake notes, police also recovered two mobile phones—a Poco and an iPhone 15 Pro—along with the car keys. Initial investigations suggest that the duo had procured the counterfeit notes from Noida and Delhi and intended to circulate them in Guwahati.

Authorities suspect the arrested individuals are part of a larger network operating in the region and have launched a full-fledged investigation to unearth the source of the fake notes and identify other members of the syndicate.
