Assam Police Seize Drugs Worth Over ₹3 Crore, Arrest Five Suspected Peddlers
Guwahati: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Assam Police arrested five suspected peddlers and seized contraband worth over ₹3 crore in separate operations in Cachar district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday.
The operations were conducted at two locations—Silchar Bypass and Sonai—by Cachar district police. Sharing the details on X, Sarma lauded the police for their continued efforts in combating the drug menace.
At Silchar Bypass, two individuals were apprehended, and 88 grams of heroin valued at ₹60 lakh were recovered. Meanwhile, in Sonai, three suspects were arrested with 9,000 Yaba tablets, a banned psychotropic substance under India’s Controlled Substances Act. The estimated market value of the seized tablets is ₹3 crore.
“Carrying forward our anti-narcotics ops, @cacharpolice carried out 2 operations,” the Chief Minister wrote, highlighting the government’s ongoing commitment to eliminating drug trafficking in the state.
Yaba tablets, known for their dangerous stimulant properties, have become a growing concern in India and neighboring regions. Their smuggling and distribution are tightly linked to cross-border networks.
This operation marks another milestone in Assam’s intensified anti-narcotics drive under the leadership of Chief Minister Sarma. The state has been implementing stringent measures to dismantle drug networks and bring perpetrators to justice.
The arrested individuals are currently in custody, and further investigations are underway to trace the broader network involved in the trafficking. Local authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating the drug trade and ensuring the safety of Assam’s citizens.
