Assam Police Seizes Cache of Chinese-Origin Grenades and Other Weapons in Sonitpur District

Guwahati, 12th August: In a significant operation on the morning of August 12, the Assam Police seized a cache of weapons and explosives, including five hand grenades of Chinese origin, in Bilasiguri-Batasipur village, under the jurisdiction of Dhekiajuli Police Station in Sonitpur district. The operation led to the recovery of a substantial arsenal, consisting of five Chinese hand grenades, five handmade grenades, a pistol, a revolver, and five detonators.

Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh took to X (formerly Twitter) to share details of the successful operation, underscoring its importance in the ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security in the region.

According to DGP Singh, the recovered arms and ammunition are believed to have been buried during the active years of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), a militant group with a history of insurgency in Assam. The NDFB, originally known as the Bodo Security Force (BdSF) and led by Ranjan Daimary, was established on October 3, 1986, and later renamed on November 25, 1994.

Though the NDFB has been under a ceasefire agreement with the Assam and Union Government since May 2005, the discovery of these buried arms underscores the ongoing challenges in fully disarming and neutralizing the remnants of the insurgent group. The operation marks a critical step in the region’s continuous efforts to ensure long-term peace and stability.
