Assam Police Seizes Codeine-Based Cough Syrup Worth Rs 2 Crore; CM Sarma Highlights State’s Anti-Drug Success

Assam: In a major breakthrough against drug trafficking, Assam Police seized 11,100 bottles of Codeine-based cough syrup valued at Rs 2 crore near Damcherra in Cachar district on January 3.

Acting on credible intelligence inputs, the police intercepted a vehicle transporting the contraband during an anti-narcotics operation.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his official X handle to commend the operation, stating, “Based on credible intelligence, an anti-narcotics operation was conducted by Cachar police near Damcherra where a vehicle transporting illegal substances was intercepted. Commendable efforts by Assam police.”

Speaking at the State Guest House in Koinadhara, Guwahati, CM Sarma outlined Assam’s significant achievements in combating drug trafficking over the years. According to the Chief Minister, the police seized narcotics worth Rs 682.44 crore in 2024 alone, adding to an impressive record since 2021. Over the past four years, drugs valued at Rs 2,629.25 crore, including heroin, ganja, opium, and psychotropic substances, have been confiscated.

In 2024, Assam Police arrested 5,059 individuals and registered 3,287 cases related to drug trafficking. Since 2021, a total of 22,776 kilograms of ganja, 114 kilograms of opium, 14 kilograms of morphine, and over 33 lakh psychotropic substance tablets have been seized, along with 2.30 lakh bottles of cough syrup.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the state’s success in curbing child marriage. Between 2021 and 2024, Assam Police arrested 5,978 individuals and registered 6,361 cases, filing charge sheets in 5,577 cases. In 2023 alone, 4,927 arrests were made, with an additional 641 arrests in 2024.

CM Sarma emphasized the overall reduction in crime in Assam. “In 2021, a total of 1,33,239 cases of crime were registered, while in 2024, the number dropped significantly to 49,966. The crime rate per lakh population has also decreased from 379 in 2021 to 139.2 in 2024. Similarly, crimes against women and crimes against SC/ST communities have seen a sharp decline,” he stated.

The Chief Minister lauded the Assam Police for their relentless efforts, underlining their role in ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order across the state.
