Assam Police, STF Bust Major Drug Syndicate; Seize Narcotics Worth Over ₹120 Crore

Guwahati, August 10, 2024 In a significant operation against drug trafficking, the Assam Police, in collaboration with the Special Task Force (STF), conducted coordinated raids in the Karimganj and Cachar districts, leading to the arrest of four individuals and the seizure of narcotics valued at over ₹120 crore.

The accused, identified as Noimul Haque, Fuzail Ahmed, Atiqur Rahman alias Atik, and Jagajit Deb Barma alias Barman, were apprehended following a tip-off that triggered the police operations on August 9. The raids uncovered a large quantity of illegal drugs, including 3,50,000 Yaba tablets and 1.3 kg of heroin.

In Karimganj district, the authorities discovered the drugs hidden within “secret chambers” of a 12-wheeler truck. According to Assam Police Inspector General Parthasarathi Mahanta, the estimated market value of the contraband seized in Karimganj alone is approximately ₹115 crore.

Simultaneously, a parallel operation in Cachar district led to the recovery of 18,000 Yaba tablets, with an estimated value of ₹5.5 crore. The seizure took place at Kathal Road in Silchar, dealing another blow to the drug network in the region.

The successful raids highlight the Assam Police’s ongoing efforts to combat the growing menace of drug trafficking across the state. The arrested individuals are expected to face charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act as investigations continue to unravel the syndicate’s broader network and connections.

These operations underscore the increasing challenges posed by drug syndicates in Assam, as law enforcement agencies intensify their crackdown to dismantle these illegal networks and protect the state’s communities from the scourge of narcotics.
