Assam Police Sub-Inspector caught for Espionage, Alleges ULFA (I); Group Releases Confession Video
Guwahati, 28th January: On January 28, the banned militant group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) made public a confessional video featuring one of its members suspected of espionage.
The video, shared on YouTube, featured ULFA-I leaders announcing the apprehension of Manash Borgohain, also known as Mukut Axom, accusing him of violating the outfit’s constitution.
In his video confession following the arrest, Mukut Axom revealed that he was allegedly dispatched by Assam state authorities to spy on ULFA-I. He disclosed his association with the Special Branch of Assam Police since 2021, participating in a mission to surveil ULFA-I’s activities.
Axom stated in his confession video, “I was working in the Special Branch of Assam Police as a sub-inspector since 2021. My ID No is – IG8371963421. Through this ID number, you will be able to identify me as the SB’s sub-inspector. I had been engaged in a special mission since joining the Special Branch in 2021, directed to work against ULFA-I and monitor the organization’s activities. Through ongoing acts and efforts to gain the trust of the group’s members, we were eventually able to earn their confidence.”
He continued, “Following this, I joined ULFA-I in November. It was my mission to join ULFA-I. There was no ideological indoctrination before joining the outfit; it was entirely a mission. Manab Chaliha and Digambar Pandey made me part of the mission, while GP Singh, Partha Sarathi Mahanta, and Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, the DGP in 2021, directed me for the mission. Several other young men and women were recruited for the mission, offered financial assistance. After accepting the demands, we decided to follow the orders of the authorities and work secretly against ULFA-I. We received training for the mission at Kahilipara in Guwahati, primarily focusing on Biometrics, i.e., how to destroy the system used by ULFA-I in any environment and situation.”
Axom claimed to have joined ULFA-I in November 2023 as part of his mission and identified individuals who allegedly directed and recruited him and others for this mission.
In addition to his mission training, Axom disclosed the tasks they were trained to perform, including destroying ULFA-I’s systems and projecting a negative image of the organization to other nations. He mentioned being part of a team of eight on this mission.
