Assam Police Suspends three Officers Amid Extortion at Jalukbari checkpost

Guwahati: In a stern move to reinforce accountability within the police force, three personnel stationed at the Jalukbari police checkpost in Guwahati have been suspended following allegations of extorting money from livestock transporters. The suspended individuals—Constable Shashi Sinha, Home Guard jawan Dharmeshwar Rajbanshi, and police vehicle driver Dulal Das—were reportedly involved in a scheme targeting vehicles carrying cattle and buffaloes.

The action was taken after widespread media coverage exposed the alleged extortion racket, prompting swift administrative intervention. Authorities have stated that the suspension is in line with the Assam government’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption within law enforcement agencies. An internal probe has been launched, with officials assuring that the inquiry will be conducted transparently and without bias.

In a separate incident that has sparked public outrage, Sub-Inspector Haidar Hussain of Gohpur Police Station has been removed from active duty and placed under reserve status following grave allegations of custodial brutality. The officer stands accused of torturing a young man inside a restroom at the police station, reportedly subjecting the victim to severe physical abuse.

The allegations have raised serious concerns about the conduct of police officers and the adequacy of custodial safeguards. Reacting swiftly to the incident, Sonitpur Superintendent of Police Subhasish Baruah ordered Hussain’s immediate suspension and directed Gohpur Circle Officer Pranjit Lahkar to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. The twin cases have reignited the debate on police reform and the urgent need for systemic checks to prevent abuse of power within the force.
