Assam Police Takes Action Against Officers Involved in Civilians’ Assault

Guwahati, 27th June: Assam’s Director-General of Police (DGP) issued a directive on June 27 instructing the Commissioner of Police in Guwahati and the Superintendent of Police in Tinsukia to suspend police personnel implicated in recent altercations and assaults on civilians.

In a statement on ‘X’, the DGP emphasized, “Instructions have been issued to CP Guwahati & SP Tinsukia to place under suspension police personnel involved in recent scuffle & assault on civilians. Further lawful & departmental action shall be taken on receipt of enquiry reports. @assampolice Hq shall not condone any wilful and uncalled for/unlawful use of force on civilians. As police personnel all of us have to show higher degree of restraint even under provocation, if any.”

The Assam Police Headquarters underscored its commitment to ensuring no tolerance for unjustified use of force on civilians, stressing the importance of restraint by police personnel even in challenging situations.

This decision follows public outcry over two incidents. Firstly, an MBA student, Pradum Chhetri, allegedly faced assault by Sub-Inspector Pranjal Phukan and three others at Lekhapani police station. Witnesses reported Phukan forcibly removing Chhetri from a vehicle and physically attacking him, prompting Chhetri’s family to file an FIR seeking justice.

Secondly, three sub-inspectors and a constable from Basistha police are under investigation for allegedly brutalizing a mentally challenged youth, Dhan Nath, resulting in a reported leg fracture. Public anger mounted, demanding accountability and thorough investigations into the officers’ conduct.

The Assam Police Commissioner has interrogated the involved officers as part of ongoing inquiries, underscoring the need for transparency and accountability in law enforcement actions.
