Assam Police to Transfer ULFA-I Bomb Threat Cases to NIA; Key Arrests Made

The Assam Police will transfer two cases related to the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) bomb threats on Independence Day to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), according to Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh.

DGP Singh announced on August 20 that, following ULFA-I’s claim of planting explosives at 25 locations across Assam on August 15, the police registered ten cases. Two of these cases will be handed over to the NIA, with a request for immediate facilitation already submitted to the Central government.

Significant progress has been made in the investigation, including the arrest of four individuals in Sivasagar suspected of involvement in the plot. One of the arrestees is believed to be a key figure. Singh emphasized that further details would remain undisclosed to maintain the investigation’s integrity but assured that justice would be served.

The DGP condemned attempts to disrupt Assam’s progress, stating, “This incident aims to derail our development. We will uphold law and order to protect the state’s advancements.”

Additionally, Singh addressed the bomb scare at a Guwahati mall on Monday, labeling it a hoax. The mall was evacuated and thoroughly searched, but no suspicious items were found. The ULFA-I’s Independence Day bomb plot, which failed due to technical issues, led to the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for further probing.
