Assam Police’s Multi-Crore Drug Haul Targets Cartels

Guwahati: In a sustained offensive against the state’s drug trade, Assam police have netted narcotics worth a staggering ₹18.8 crore in a series of operations this week, as confirmed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The back-to-back busts highlight the state’s resolve to dismantle drug networks, with Sarma reiterating his government’s firm “no compromise” stance.

The most recent and significant seizure took place in Puwamara where Sribhumi police acted on specific intelligence to confiscate 650 grams of heroin and 10,000 Yaba tablets. The haul, with an estimated market value of ₹5 crore, led to the immediate arrest of four suspected traffickers.

The Puwamara operation follows two other major victories for law enforcement. In a separate action earlier in the week, Karbi Anglong police dealt a major blow to a drug cartel by seizing 10.7 kilograms of morphine, with a street value of approximately ₹11 crore. Two individuals linked to the racket were taken into custody. Just a day prior, on August 26, Cachar police intercepted a vehicle in Lakhipur, acting on a tip-off. They recovered 416 grams of heroin, valued at an estimated ₹2.8 crore, and arrested one person. The Chief Minister has used his social media platform, X, to laud the police’s relentless efforts, affirming that these successes are a clear signal of the state’s determination to weaken the hold of drug syndicates on its youth.
