Assam: PPFA Calls for Reopening of Guwahati’s Historic Lakshminath Bezbarua Road

Assam: The Patriotic People’s Front Assam (PPFA) has urged authorities to reopen the Lakshminath Bezbarua (LNB) Road, a historically significant route connecting Guwahati Railway Station with Nehru Park and Gauhati Town Club on MG Road.

Named after Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbarua, a pioneer of Assamese literature and the author of the state anthem ‘O Mor Aponar Desh’, the road has been inaccessible for years, disrupting both cultural significance and practical connectivity.

The forum expressed concern over the prolonged closure, stating that it has severely impacted daily commuting and access for heavy vehicles to crucial locations such as the Reserve Bank of India office, the Army Transit Camp, and Guwahati’s busiest railway station.

Once a vibrant thoroughfare, the area near the Gauhati Town Club point, adjacent to Judges Field and Nehru Park, was converted into a food court with an underground parking lot in the 1990s. However, the food court has since been abandoned and now attracts antisocial activities.

Highlighting the deteriorating condition of the underground parking facility, the PPFA described it as dark, unhygienic, and poorly maintained, despite its regular use by car owners.

To address the issue, the forum proposed demolishing the defunct food court to restore the road’s original alignment or constructing an elevated pathway to enable seamless vehicular and pedestrian movement.

The PPFA has called upon Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah to prioritize the reopening of LNB Road, terming the closure a “past error” that needs immediate correction. The forum emphasized the importance of blending modern technology with urban planning to revive the road while retaining its historical and cultural essence.

LNB Road stands as a symbol of Assamese pride, and the PPFA’s call reflects the growing demand for restoring its significance in the city’s infrastructure and public life.
