Assam: Pre-Election Violence Erupts as BJP District President Targeted in Gauripur Chase

Guwahati: Political turmoil gripped Gauripur in the lead-up to the panchayat elections as Ranjit Kumar Roy, the BJP president of Dhubri district, became the target of a harrowing vehicular chase.

Sources indicate that a group of 14 to 15 individuals, riding motorcycles, pursued Roy’s Bolero for an alarming 15 kilometers, commencing from Moterjhar and continuing towards Gauripur.

The pursuit reached a critical point near the under-construction NH-127(B) highway in the vicinity of Shikaritari, where the assailants attempted to halt and attack the vehicle. During the high-speed chase, Roy’s vehicle reportedly collided with a sheep.

The confrontation escalated further at the bustling Chowrangimore market in Gauripur, where the mob reportedly attempted to physically assault Roy.

However, the situation was defused by the timely arrival and intervention of local police, who successfully dispersed the crowd, preventing any physical harm to the BJP leader.

BJP party workers alleged that the attackers were carrying party flags and symbols, insinuating a deliberate attempt to intimidate Roy and disrupt his campaign activities.

The party has condemned the incident as a politically motivated attack designed to destabilize the electoral environment and has demanded immediate and stringent legal action against the perpetrators.

In the aftermath of the incident, Gauripur police have apprehended two individuals, Aashiq Iqbal from Baniamari village and Anwar Ali from Debotar Hasdah village.

Both suspects are now in police custody, and a formal First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged at Gauripur police station.

Authorities have launched a thorough investigation to identify and capture the remaining individuals involved in the alleged assault.
