Assam: PRI Presidents Undergo Intensive Training for Enhanced Grassroots Governance

Guwahati: A significant five-day training programme for newly elected Gaon Panchayat Presidents commenced today at the Golap Borbora State Institute of Rural Development in Guwahati. The initiative, aimed at bolstering grassroots governance, seeks to equip these local leaders with comprehensive knowledge of administrative protocols and various development schemes.

The inaugural session, held this morning, was graced by Assam Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass. On its very first day, the programme welcomed 75 elected Presidents from Sonitpur district, eager to delve into the intricacies of their new roles.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Dass highlighted the extensive reach of the state’s Panchayati Raj Institutions. “We have 2,192 Panchayat Presidents, 363 Anchalik Panchayat Presidents, 397 Zila Parishad members, and 21,598 general ward members,” he stated. He further elaborated on the department’s commitment to training, adding, “For the training of ward members, we provide training to approximately 21,000 PRI members at training centres in the districts.”

Speaking specifically about the ongoing programme, the Minister informed, “We have started training 75 elected Presidents from Sonitpur district today at the Golap Borbora State Institute of Rural Development, and it will continue for five more days.” He also revealed plans for similar five-day training sessions to be conducted across all districts, with the comprehensive programme slated to continue until December 8, ensuring widespread capacity building for PRI members throughout Assam.

This vital initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to improving the effectiveness of Panchayati Raj Institutions, empowering local leaders with the necessary tools to implement rural development schemes and uphold robust local governance practices. Panchayat and Rural Development Department Secretary Munindra Sharma, Additional Commissioner Jayanta Goswami, and a host of other departmental officials were present during the inaugural ceremony, lending their support to this crucial endeavour.

In other news concerning local development, earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated ‘Bodoland Speaks: From Vision to Action’, a commendable initiative by the Bodoland Territorial Council under the Bodoland Happiness Mission, at a programme held at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati. The Chief Minister lauded the Bodoland Happiness Mission, commending it as an excellent effort to further strengthen the hard-won peace and stability achieved by the people of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) over the past five years. He remarked that the Bodoland Happiness Mission, since its launch in the BTR, has been significantly successful in fostering happiness across the region.
