Assam: Private Tutor Allegedly Assaulted by Parents in Sivasagar

Sivasagar – A young private tutor has reported a shocking incident of physical assault by the parents of one of her students in Assam’s Sivasagar district.

The alleged attack took place on Amguri Road and stemmed from a dispute over overdue tuition fees that escalated into a violent confrontation.

According to the victim, identified as Purabi, the conflict arose when she visited the home of the accused, Sunil Thakur and Poonam Devi, to collect her pending fees.

The couple had delayed the payment date from October 12 to October 14, prompting Purabi to take action. Recounting the harrowing experience, she stated, “I went to collect my tuition fees, but they kept postponing the payment. Sunil asked me to wait at his shop, and after some time, Poonam arrived. She immediately started verbally abusing me and, without warning, began hitting me with her sandals. She even tried to attack me with scissors, but a passerby intervened. Shortly afterward, Sunil grabbed me by the neck, leaving me injured.”

After the assault, Purabi sought assistance from the Namti police, who then took her to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. However, she alleged that the police pressured her to withdraw her complaint. “The officers claimed there would be complications during the investigation because I was unable to write my own complaint due to my injuries,” Purabi explained. She noted that a member of the Village Defence Party (VDP), identified as Asad, helped draft an application and obtained her signatures on it.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with local youth organization Asomiya Yuva Mancha accusing the police of favoring the alleged attackers.

In a show of solidarity with Purabi, the organization issued a stern ultimatum to the Namti police, demanding the immediate arrest of Sunil Thakur and Poonam Devi within two hours.

They warned of “severe consequences” if the authorities failed to take swift action. The Asomiya Yuva Mancha has also filed a formal complaint at the Namti police station, officially naming both individuals as the accused.

This alarming incident highlights the escalating tensions between educators and parents over financial disputes, raising concerns about safety and the treatment of individuals seeking justice in the face of violence. The case is being closely monitored as the community awaits further action from law enforcement.
