Assam: Protests Emerge in Margherita Against state Government’s Move to Introduce English Medium for Mathematics and Science

Guwahati, 24th January: The All Assam Student Union (AASU) on January 24 organized a protest in Margherita, Tinsukia district, expressing discontent over the state government’s decision to introduce English as the medium of instruction for Mathematics and Science from class 6 onwards.

Members of the Margherita regional student union raised slogans opposing the government’s move to implement English medium teaching, even in vernacular medium schools across Assam. Protesters voiced concerns, asserting that such a decision would adversely impact the growth of Assamese, Bodo, and other local languages.

Rupam Baruah, an executive member of the Tinsukia district student union, announced a statewide agitation under the guidance of AASU to safeguard Assamese, Bodo, and other vernacular languages recognized as mediums of instruction in government schools in Assam.

Baruah disclosed a series of planned actions, including a cycle rally in Margherita on January 27, protest rallies on February 1, effigy burning of State Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu on February 5, and a 13-hour hunger strike on February 10. These activities aim to convey the students’ strong opposition to the government’s language policy shift.
