Assam: Protests Erupt at Banhbari Police Station Over Alleged Police Brutality
Assam: Tensions soared at Banhbari Police Station in Baksa as a large group of locals gathered to protest alleged police brutality. The demonstrators surrounded the police station, voicing strong objections against the reported mistreatment of several youths by the police.
The crowd, composed of both men and women, held placards and chanted slogans like “Down with Assam Police,” “Suspend Jayanta Das,” and “Give us justice,” demanding accountability for the actions of the officers involved. The unrest stemmed from claims that intoxicated police personnel had falsely accused two local youths of overtaking their vehicle and subjected them to severe physical abuse the previous night.
The situation escalated quickly, prompting the arrival of Salbari Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) to assess the growing protest. Protesters specifically called for the immediate suspension of Banhbari Police Station in-charge Jayanta Das and justice for the victims, Sashin Orang and Sanjib Das, who were allegedly tortured by the officers in question.
The protest has sparked a broader conversation around police accountability and the need for better oversight of law enforcement practices in the region.
