Assam: Protests Erupt in South Sribhumi Over Alleged Voter List Discrepancies
Assam: South Sribhumi witnessed a wave of protests on Monday as allegations of significant irregularities in the draft voter list of the Shree Bhumi Panchayat came to light. Led by local MLA Siddique Ahmed, nearly a hundred residents gathered at the dharna shed, raising slogans against what they termed a deliberate manipulation of voter records.
MLA Ahmed later submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, claiming that around 50,000 names, including his own, had been unjustly removed from the voter list.
Expressing grave concern, Ahmed highlighted startling discrepancies, including instances where entire polling stations were reportedly assigned to a single voter. He alleged that these anomalies were not accidental but deliberately orchestrated at the district level under specific directives.
Addressing the demonstrators, Ahmed emphasized the need for immediate action to rectify the discrepancies. He warned that failure to resolve the issue promptly would trigger widespread protests across the district, underscoring the matter’s urgency and importance for democratic integrity.
The allegations have sparked concerns among the residents of South Sribhumi, many of whom fear disenfranchisement in the upcoming elections. The district administration is yet to issue an official response, but mounting pressure suggests the issue will remain a focal point of political discourse in the region.
