Assam: Protests Erupt Over Sonapur Police Firing Incident

Guwahati, September 14, 2024 – A wave of protests has spread across Assam following a police firing incident during an eviction drive in Sonapur Kachutali, which left two dead and several others injured. The All BTC Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) has strongly condemned the event, accusing the police of excessive force.

On Saturday, ABMSU organized demonstrations at district headquarters and subdivisions throughout the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). The union’s General Secretary, Joydul Islam Seik, criticized the BJP-led state government for its failure to protect citizens and demanded a thorough investigation into the incident. Seik also vowed to escalate the protests in response to what he termed as police brutality.

ABMSU plans to hold a major demonstration in Delhi, where they will present a memorandum to the President of India, seeking justice and accountability for the tragic event.
