Assam: Protests Escalate as Student Union Surrounds MLA’s Residence in Margherita

Guwahati, 4th July: In a dramatic turn of events, the All Moran Student’s Union, in collaboration with the Satra Mukti Sangram Samity Tirap Jagun Regional committee, staged a protest outside the residence of Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma at Segunbari Tiniali, Margherita. Over 200 union members participated in a padyatra from Segunbari Tiniali to express their grievances directly at Sharma’s doorstep.

Tensions escalated when associates of MLA Bhaskar Sharma allegedly assaulted a member of the student union during the protest. In response, the union issued a 12-hour ultimatum demanding an apology from the accused for the assault on their member and MLA Bhaskar Sharma. However, according to media reports, no apology was extended within the stipulated time.

Joy Kanto Moran, General Secretary of the union, condemned the incident, describing it as “unfortunate.” He accused MLA Bhaskar Sharma and his associates of engaging in “dirty politics” during a visit to the Tekeri flood-affected relief camp, which allegedly led to the assault on their member.

“We demand an immediate apology from MLA Bhaskar Sharma. If no apology is forthcoming, the union will take physical action whenever and wherever we encounter him,” Moran declared.

A member of the All Moran Student’s Union voiced frustration, stating, “We gave MLA Bhaskar Sharma 12 hours to seek forgiveness publicly in front of flood-affected people. Unfortunately, he has failed to take any steps. It raises questions about his conduct and authority to mobilize supporters against us.”

The incident has sparked widespread concern, prompting scrutiny of MLA Bhaskar Sharma’s actions and calls for swift resolution from local authorities to prevent further escalation.
