Assam: Public Outcry in Margherita Following Death of Pregnant Woman Amid Alleged Medical Negligence
Margherita, 20th September: Tension has escalated in the Margherita sub-division after the tragic death of a pregnant woman, Rabiya Khatun, allegedly due to medical negligence at Margherita FRU Civil Hospital. The incident, which occurred on September 17, has sparked widespread outrage, with demands for an urgent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Rabiya Khatun, a resident of Hill View Balukhad, was admitted to the hospital around 11:30 am under the care of Dr. Selix Alam, a gynecologist. According to her husband, Sahadat Ali, Dr. Alam advised an immediate transfer to Cherish Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, citing her critical condition. However, despite waiting for hours at Cherish Hospital, Dr. Alam reportedly never arrived. Subsequently, Dr. Abdul Halim, the proprietor of Cherish Hospital, referred Khatun to Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh. Tragically, Khatun passed away while en route to AMCH.
Local social worker Mohammed Toufik Khan condemned the incident, emphasizing that both the mother and her unborn child lost their lives due to the alleged negligence. He called for an impartial investigation into the matter to ensure justice.
In response to the incident, a memorandum was submitted to the Tinsukia District Commissioner via the Margherita sub-divisional administration, demanding strict action against those responsible. Sahadat Ali has also urged authorities to revoke Dr. Alam’s medical license and to arrest him to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The incident has put immense pressure on local officials, including the Tinsukia District Commissioner, the Margherita sub-divisional administration, and the health department, to conduct a thorough investigation and to take appropriate action against those found guilty of negligence.
