Assam: Raha MLA, Sashikanta Das to join BJP
Guwahati: Congress MLA Sashikanta Das is likely to join Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), said Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma.
According to reports, CM Sarma said that Assam MLA Sashikanta Das has expressed his willingness to work with the BJP government and has pledged his support. Das will ‘work extremely closely with the administration’ and for the development of his Raha seat, according to Sarma.
Das has not officially resigned from Congress, but he is expected to join the saffron party in the near future. Prior to Das, two Congress MLAs — Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain – defected to the BJP, claiming “congress infighting.”
Rupjyoti Kurmi had previously defected to the BJP, citing fundamental differences within the party. Kurmi claimed that he had lost faith in Rahul Gandhi’s leadership and that the party is hesitant to give youthful leaders attention.
It may be mentioned that Sushanta Borgohain, a two-time Assam MLA, resigned from his role as Thowra MLA in August, blaming the ‘internal political atmosphere’ in Congress.
